City to use grant to aid website, develop program

The city of Pembroke received a bit of good news as it received $14,400 in grants from the Eastern Ontario Development Fund.

The money will be used to enhance the city’s website to implement the Ottawa Valley Musician Development Program.

During a recent meeting of the economic development committee, Susan Ellis, the manager of economic, recreation and tourism, said her department had been successful in obtaining a pair of which are administered through the Renfrew County Community Futures.

The first one, for $5,000, will be used to help pay of the redevelopment and design of the website, which is an ongoing project.

The second grant, for $9,400, is aimed at encouraging the development of local musicians.

“As we began to develop plans for our 180th anniversary, we kept hearing how people would like to see more local entertainment,” Ms. Ellis said.

As part of this, the city will be holding a competition in which local bands will perform in front of a panel of judges. The winners will receive prize money and be given the opportunity to open for the head line acts performing during the waterfront festival.

The grant is being used to cover the costs of the competition, she said.
